The Economic Salon

The Simon Fraser Economics Student Society
presents

The Economic Salon

-A forum of economic based discussion-

A salon is traditionally characterized as a space where a 'meeting of the minds' occurs, and where a variety of relevant issues are discussed. This salon will emphasize economic orientated conversation, debate, and education on a variety of topics, and from a myriad of perspectives amongst those majoring/minoring in economics, or those who are simply interested in the science of human action.

We at the ESS are aware of the demands of university students, and understand that any additional amount of reading or study on top of an already wholesome workload is an unfair proposal. The Economic Salon will possess a casual atmosphere where one will be able to discuss and/or read a series of pre- selected articles, position papers, blogs, and other material related to the weekly topic.

This is an opportunity to engage in the social science in which you have chosen to pursue academically, or are just passionate about, while providing contextual examples of the theories which you have been taught, all while enlightening each other on economic issues, policies, and solutions in which we were ignorant of.

Thursday, February 9th  from 2:30-3:30 : Resource Economics
Thursday, March 1st  from 2:30-3:30 : Pensions, Welfare and Macroeconomics

The Economic Debate Series

The Economics Student Society is excited to present its first in a series of student debates on March 8, 2012.

We are currently looking for individuals or teams of two who are interested in debating on an economic orientated topic. Debate experience is not mandatory, but those interested in applying should keep in mind that debate is an intellectually rigorous exercise, which draws upon on individuals ability to reason in a coherent manner, while maintaining a stream of logic throughout their argument; the ability to think quickly while responding to points raised by the opposing team; and, of course, a pre- established breadth of knowledge in contemporary economic affairs, theory, and policy.

The ESS paired with the SFU Debate Society will be providing an orientation session prior to the debate as a way of introducing basic styles, techniques, and other structural components of debate to those unfamiliar with debate orthodoxy
We at the ESS believe this debate series is a phenomenal way to engage economics students in intellectual discourse and argumentation, and as a way to firm up and express the theories and knowledge you have attained throughout your studies. Debate serves to emphasize and develop a wide range of practical skills, such as public- speaking, mental organization, and rapid argumentation development, which will benefit the individual in their academic, professional, and personal endeavors.

The team who wins the debate, as decided by a judging panel comprised of both faculty and those with debate experience, will win a prize of $200, and all those who participate will take home an ESS fitted t-shirt.
Respond to this e-mail if you would like to apply to participate in the debate (either as an individual or as a team), and we will be in touch shortly regarding further details.

Those interested in public discussion and networking with other people in the department, but not wanting to participate in the debate, are encouraged to attend and watch. We guarantee you will learn as you watch. Please pay attention to posters and a further email which will provide all the necessary details in regard to day, time, and location.
-Free coffee, tea, and muffins will be provided to all those who participate and attend-

Until we meet in the arena of debate,

Yours truly
The Economic Student Society
